Motorola Unveils New Razr Foldables: Bigger Displays, AI Features, But No Verizon

Motorola has officially announced its 2024 Razr foldable smartphone lineup, introducing significant upgrades while maintaining competitive pricing. However, the new models won't be available through Verizon, a notable absence for the brand.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Two Models: Razr and Razr+ (known as Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra outside the US)
  • Larger Displays:
    • Razr: 6.9 main display, 3.6 cover display
    • Razr+: 6.9 main display, 4 cover display (largest on a flip phone)
  • Processors:
    • Razr: MediaTek Dimensity 7300X
    • Razr+: Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
  • Cameras:
    • Razr: 50MP main + 13MP ultrawide
    • Razr+: 50MP main + 2x telephoto (replacing ultrawide)
  • Battery: 4,200mAh with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging
  • Software: Android 14 with Moto AI features

Pricing and Availability

  • Razr: $699
  • Razr+: $999
  • Pre-orders start July 10, with devices shipping July 24

Carrier Availability

The new Razr models will be available through AT&T, T-Mobile, and various prepaid carriers. However, Verizon is notably absent from the list, likely due to the lack of mmWave 5G support in the devices.

Moto AI and Software Features

Motorola is emphasizing AI capabilities, powered by Google's Gemini:

  • AI-enhanced photography
  • Generative wallpapers
  • Quick access to Gemini via power button
  • Upcoming features: notification summaries, conversation recording and summarization

Design and Durability

  • Vegan leather or vegan suede backs in various colors
  • Improved hinge: 30% smaller, more durable, and water-resistant (IPX8)
  • Creaseless main display

While Motorola has made significant strides with the 2024 Razr lineup, the absence from Verizon's lineup may impact its market reach in the US. Nevertheless, the competitive pricing and feature set position the new Razr models as strong contenders in the growing foldable smartphone market.
