Steam Deck Update Brings Major Features: Remote Play as PC Controller, Steam Families, and More

Use Your Steam Deck as a PC Controller

One of the most intriguing new features allows users to turn their Steam Deck into a controller for their PC. This functionality is achieved through Steam Remote Play, which streams games from a PC on the same network to the Steam Deck. Here's how it works:

  1. Install the desired game on your PC and ensure both devices are on the same network.
  2. Enable Remote Play in Steam settings on your PC.
  3. On the Steam Deck, select Stream for the game you want to play.
  4. Choose your PC from the pop-up menu to start streaming.

To optimize performance, users can adjust streaming settings on the Steam Deck, including reducing resolution and enabling low-latency mode. This feature is particularly useful for those who want to enjoy PC gaming with a controller but don't have a dedicated gamepad.

Steam Families Now Available to All Users

The update also brings Steam Families out of beta, making it accessible to all Steam Deck users. This feature allows for easy game sharing among friends and family members, enabling temporary access to specific titles in one's library.

Other Notable Improvements

  • Global maximum resolution setting: Users can now set a maximum resolution for all games from the Settings menu, rather than adjusting it on a per-game basis.
  • Sign Out option in the power menu: Adds convenience for users with multiple accounts.
  • Performance enhancements: Reduced CPU usage when using both Gyro and Joystick or Trackpad for mouse input.
  • Bug fixes: Addressed issues with app disappearances and Bluetooth controller recognition.

While this update brings numerous improvements, it's worth noting that the ability to play games simultaneously on Steam Deck and PC without using offline mode remains unavailable. Users will still need to rely on the offline mode workaround for this functionality.

As Valve continues to refine and expand the Steam Deck's capabilities, these updates demonstrate the company's commitment to enhancing the user experience and solidifying the device's position as a versatile gaming platform.
