Google's latest foldable smartphone, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, is facing an unexpected hurdle just days before its release. The $1,799 device is incompatible with Google's own Pixel Stand wireless chargers, including the second-generation model released last year.
The issue stems from the placement of the wireless charging coil in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. According to Google's support page, the coil is positioned off-center compared to previous Pixel models, making it difficult to align properly with the Pixel Stand. This misalignment prevents the phone from charging wirelessly when placed on the stand.
While the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does support wireless charging, its capabilities are limited:
- Maximum wireless charging speed: 7.5W
- Incompatible with Pixel Stand and Pixel Stand 2
- May require repositioning on third-party chargers to align properly
This limitation is particularly disappointing for users who have invested in Google's ecosystem of accessories. The Pixel Stand 2, capable of delivering up to 23W of power to compatible Pixel devices, becomes essentially useless for Pixel 9 Pro Fold owners.
Google has acknowledged the issue on its support website, stating, Pixel 9 Pro Fold doesn't support the Pixel Stand but it supports many other wireless chargers. The company recommends users try alternative wireless charging solutions and experiment with phone placement to find the optimal charging position.
Despite this setback, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold boasts several notable features:
- Impressive screen size and brightness
- New AI capabilities, including Pixel Studio and Add Me
- Improved form factor compared to its predecessor
However, early hands-on reviews have also pointed out some concerns:
- Disappointing battery life
- Camera performance that falls short of the standard Pixel 9 Pro
As Google prepares to launch its second-generation foldable device, the wireless charging incompatibility raises questions about the company's design choices and quality control processes.
