Google Expands AI Overviews in Search to Six New Countries, Adds New Features
Google is rolling out its AI-powered Search Overviews to six new countries and introducing several new features to enhance user experience. This expansion comes despite mixed reception in the United States, where the feature was initially launched.
Global Expansion
After extensive testing in the US, Google is now bringing AI Overviews to:
- United Kingdom
- India
- Japan
- Indonesia
- Mexico
- Brazil
The rollout will occur gradually over the next few weeks, with full support for local languages in each country.
New Features
Save Function
Users can now save AI Overviews for later reference. This feature is currently available for English queries in the US and requires enrollment in the AI Overviews and more experiment in Search Labs.
Language Simplification
Some overviews will offer a button to simplify complex language, making it easier for users to understand difficult topics.
Enhanced Link Display
Google is introducing additional relevant links on the right side of desktop results and through site icons on mobile. This aims to provide more context and easier fact-checking.
Inline Links
An ongoing test is adding inline links within AI Overviews for bite-sized information.
Mixed Reception
While Google claims higher engagement from younger users (18-24) and overall user preference for AI Overviews, the feature has faced criticism for accuracy issues. Notable incidents include recommending eating rocks and putting glue on pizza.
