Adobe Brings AI-Powered Object Removal to Lightroom

Adobe is rolling out powerful new AI features to its popular Lightroom photo editing software, including a game-changing object removal tool.

Generative Remove: AI-Powered Object Erasing

The headline feature is called Generative Remove, which leverages Adobe's Firefly AI technology to intelligently erase unwanted objects or people from photos. Unlike Lightroom's existing spot healing tool that works best on small blemishes, Generative Remove can handle removing large objects or even people photobombing in the background.

According to Adobe, the tool analyzes the surrounding image content to realistically fill in removed areas, even with complex backgrounds like patterned wallpaper. Early demonstrations show impressive results, though real-world testing will be needed to fully evaluate its capabilities.

New AI-Powered Lens Blur Effects

Adobe is also introducing an AI-enhanced Lens Blur feature, allowing users to add artificial bokeh and depth-of-field effects to photos after the fact. The tool creates a 3D depth map of the image and offers presets like Subtle, Bubble, and Geometric blur styles.

While similar features exist in other photo apps, Adobe claims its AI implementation avoids common issues like incorrectly blurring hair on in-focus subjects.

Availability and Other Updates

Both new AI features are available now across Lightroom mobile, desktop, iPad, web and Classic versions. Generative Remove is labeled as an early access feature, suggesting it may still be refined based on user feedback.

Other Lightroom updates include:

  • Expanded tethering support for newer Sony cameras like the Alpha 7 IV and 7R V
  • Improved HDR optimization tools
  • A streamlined mobile interface

Adobe continues to aggressively integrate AI capabilities across its Creative Suite, with Lightroom joining Photoshop in leveraging the company's Firefly AI technology. As the tools mature, they promise to save significant time for professionals while empowering hobbyists with powerful editing capabilities.
